Lima Barreto - A Brazilian literary giant
Lima Barreto was a Brazilian writer and journalist, widely recognized for his critical and realist portrayal of Brazilian society in the early 20th century. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1881, he was of Afro-Brazilian descent and faced significant racial and social prejudice throughout his life. His works often focused on the struggles of marginalized groups, highlighting the racism, corruption, and social inequalities that permeated Brazil at the time. One of his most famous novels, Triste Fim de Policarpo Quaresma (The Sad End of Policarpo Quaresma), satirized Brazilian nationalism and the political climate of the time.
